New year, old town

Boy, they say a change is as good as a holiday but they are talking total crap.
A holiday is as good as it gets.

After feeling like an utter drudge - flattened, bruised and exhausted at the end of 2007 - I have just spent the last 3 weeks on a road trip avec famille - slept, slept, slept, slept, played, played, played, played, ate, ate, ate - well, you get the picture.

Went back to a tiny coastal town in NSW that I had fond memories of as a teenager.

Rounded the final curve in the road before coming into town and got ready to flinch..

'Cos, lets face it, almost any bit of coastal land on the Eastern seaboard of Australia between Sydney and Melbourne has been developed to the max, had its teeth whitened, and is wearing the property equivalent of a shiny silver g-string.

So my eyes are scrunched shut and the stress in my shoulders in killing me and we go around the bend and .... it was almost the same as 25 years ago. Humble, simple, fibro shacks, basic shops and fabulous beaches. I could have cried with joy.

And we had a lovely, simple, humble holiday. Beach, sand castles, reading, eating, talking - oh the utter joy.

Welcome to 2008 - the year of authenticity
